Abstract
Bone and/or biomaterial grafting is needed on alveolar ridge unfavorable for the successful installation of dental implants. To make favorable conditions for placement of dental implants, various grafting materials and techniques are used. The coronoid process of the mandible can be used as a donor bone. We performed many coronoid process grafting on the facial bone for maxillary reconstruction, mandibular reconstruction, augmentation of the defected zygoma or maxillo-mandible as an intraoral donor site for bone grafting, and used it for the implant installation. Among them we already reported that it is suitable for paranasal augmentation clinically.
In this article, ridge augmentation using this mandibular coronoid process is introduced with its harvesting technique and its successful outcome. Grafting of the mandibular coronoid process has many advantages ; harvesting technique is easy, safe and intraoral technique, it provides autogenous bone without affecting facial morphology and function, it can be used as block bone or chip or powder, its resorption rate seems to be slower than that of other cancellous bone because it is membranous bone. This grafts can be used usefully to augment the alveolar ridge for dental implant rehabilitation.
